H&S experts say cancelled pancake race was another victim of over-zealous restrictions

Health and safety specialists have stated that the cancellation of Ripon Carnival’s annual pancake race was an unnecessary over-reaction.

mhl support, one of the UK’s leading providers of H&S support and consultancy services, said that the event was a perfect example of long-standing events being cancelled thanks to over-zealous and ill-judged safety decisions.

Marc Schroder, CEO of the company, said: “This event has been happening in Ripon for years and has become a traditional part of its history. There is no evidence of anybody being involved in any kind of incident or injury, so a responsible risk assessment ought to have proved that the race could be held safely”.

“This is a typical example of someone making a sweeping decision on the grounds of health and safety and spoiling everyone’s fun. If the person who made this choice had consulted a fully qualified H&S practitioner and asked them to advise on the risk assessment- if indeed one was carried out - then this would not have happened”.

“I think it is more than likely that the event was cancelled for entirely different reason and that health and safety reasons are being quoted as a cover. H&S makes a great scapegoat for some people”.

“I can’t stress enough to importance of involving qualified personnel to make these kinds of decisions. There are an ever-increasing number of perfectly reasonable, long-standing and traditional events being prohibited as a matter of course now, and there is no legitimate reason for this to be happening. It undermines genuine H&S decisions,” he added.
