Government Plans for a Care Worker's Register

Care workers looking after vulnerable adults, the elderly and children are to be registered for the first time under new government plans.

The government plans will include the registration, training and vetting of the 750,000 care workers employed in the Care Service Sector.

Care Services Minister Liam Bryne has stressed the need for General Social Care Council registration in order to provide more clarity in their profession.

The reasons behind the plans are that the government want to professionalise the care service and improve public safety in the provision of care of vulnerable people. It is hoped that implementing this register should assist in restoring public confidence in the Care Service Sector.
